Founded in
1777, San Jose was incorporated as a city in 1849. The site of San Jose's
Fairmont Hotel (right) served as California's first capitol before the legislature
moved to
Sacramento in 1853. Today, this area is Plaza de Cesar Chavez Park
in Downtown San Jose's Financial District on South Market between
Santa Clara & San Carlos streets.
In early May, the City of San Jose sponsors Cinco De Mayo Day with
a televised parade through the downtown streets, mariachi bands,
celebrity shows and street vendors.
During the summer, the City of San Jose sponsors free
music events on Thursday evenings and turns on the plaza's geyser
fountains so children and adults can keep cool.
At the end of the year, the City
of San Jose sponsors Christmas in the Park complete with Santa's
Christmas Village, children's train and low-cost public ice
skating.
